What are your GIRLS doing for SuMMeR 2010?

As summertime approaches, one question that enters the minds of parents of young teenage girls is, "What will my daughter do this summer?" Well, PomMania read an article from Family Magazine (http://www.familiesonlinemagazine.com/teens/) that lists 50 fun things to do and the top 10 are listed below. These activities may help your daughter stay busy, healthy and most of all OUT OF TROUBLE!

1. Gather up a few friends, and have a picnic in your backyard .

2. Go on a walk and take pictures of trees, flowers, dogs, etc.
3. Buy some fashion magazines, pick out a couple of really cute outfits, and try to recreate them for less!
4. Bead some bracelets and sell them for charity.
5. Volunteer at the local animal or homeless shelter.
6. Clean your room!
7. Bake some cupcakes and deliver them to friends and family.
8. Play some childhood games like "Sorry", "Candyland", or "Pretty Pretty Princess".
9. Take your dog for a walk.
10. E-mail a friend you haven't spoken to in awhile.

After previewing the Top 10 ideas, these are wonderful things to do; however, how many of us will actually make or encourage our daughters to do these things? Let's face it, most of us, if not ALL of us, realizes that the summer passes by all too quickly; usually before we can execute most of our intentions. Geez, you barely can get a solid tan or enough fun in the sun before the Autumn leaves began to fall. Nonetheless, can you actually believe that you can convince her that these things are far more enjoyable than texting, Facebooking, or just hanging with friends.

Of the Top 10 listed, we have 3 ideas (pink font), that we believe most preteen girls, ages 11-14, may end up doing for the summer. It's a sad truth. It has less to do with our parenting and almost everything to do with constructing our time. In today's society parents are required to work longer hours away from the home and often unable to do things to keep the kids occupied.

The next question on your mind would be, "If I'm not able to spend time with my daughter, what will fulfill her day?" Answers may vary, but it could very well be her loyal friends on MTV or B.E.T., or her faithful facebook buddies, or even unknown associates. It's a bit cliché, but there's nothing new under the sun.

If you are truly concerned with your daughter's summer experience, why not get her involved in something constructive that meets their particular interests. At the ages of 11-14, girls are less interested in the Day Care atmosphere with movies, museum trips, playground time, and a surprise mid-day snack.
